Emotional Quotient Inventory: Short Post Secondary (EQ-i:S PS)

An assessment of emotional intelligence in post secondary students

Key Areas Measured:

  • Intrapersonal
  • Interpersonal
  • Stress Management
  • Adaptability
  • General Mood
  • Predictive Index

Many potentially stressful lifestyle changes take place during the first years of college or university—learning to live independently, developing new friendships, and keeping up with the demands of a new academic environment. A student's level of emotional and social functioning plays a key role in whether or not he or she makes a successful transition from high school to college life.

The EQ-i:S Post Secondary Norms Supplement measures a student's level of emotional intelligence and identifies specific areas (e.g. stress management, adaptability) with which the student may have difficulties, and the Predictive Index indicates the overall liklihood that the sudent will succeed. The tool is instrumental in helping predict and improve students' performance in their new academic environment by comparing a student's performance to that of other postsecondary students on the EQ-i's five composite scales (Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Stress Management, Adaptability, and General Mood).

Intervention strategies can then be developed to help the student successfully adjust to the postsecondary environment before those difficulties affect academic performance.

Normative data includes results from 5713 students aged 17–21 who were in post-secondary academic environments. Specific norms are available for each gender.

Feedback Reports facilitate discussion with the student. They outline a student’s areas of strength and areas in need of development, and suggest strategies for improvement.

Group Reports allow a counselor to evaluate group disposition and to suggest programs that might benefit a significant portion of the group’s members. They provide graphical displays of the Predictive Index, Total EQ, and five composite scale scores. Suggestions for development strategies are also included.
